With the year 6's unavailable for the annual power league under 11's football tournament, it was down to the younger, more excitable year 4 and 5's to provide the strength and depth required for a tough tournament. A baptism of fire indeed for the inexperienced starlets, and a group of death containing Crescent, St.Greg's and Blurton B team meant any success this team achieved would be a stepping stone to a brighter future. A tough task ahead of us, the Belgrave Braves (more team name suggestions are welcome parents) began superbly and beat the Blurton B team 5 - 1 with Lewis Hughes (Year 5) bagging four goals, including a magnificent free kick, and a great solo effort from the left foot of Zayn Sadiq (Year 4) completing the rout. Confidence was now high amongst the whipper snappers and we went into the next two games against Crescent and St. Gregs with as much gusto as could be mustered but fell short against bigger opposition losing 6-1 and 5-1 respectively. Consolation goals from Lewis, with yet another stunning free kick, and a well deserved goal for his tireless performance for Hamza Hussain (Year 5) were a sign of exciting things to come. The Nesbitt twins Paddy and Alfie (Year 4) were solid in defence and Aman Hussain (Year 4) despite his diminutive frame gave a stellar performance in goal and kept the scoreline respectable in both the latter games. Subtain Javed (Year 5) worked hard and Ibaad Hanif (Year 5) showed composure and agility way beyond his years and is definitely one for the future. A key mention to the whole squad who should be very proud of their exemplary performance both on and off the pitch.
